Welcome to Physics at The University of Wisconsin–Madison!
The first Ph.D. in Physics was awarded from UW–Madison in 1899. Since then, our department has continued a strong tradition of graduate study and research in all areas of Physics. Because there is no area of specialization required for the degree, incoming students are able to explore research within the department before selecting a faculty advisor.
Currently, we offer two graduate degrees in Physics: a PhD and an MS in Physics – Quantum Computing. The PhD is a traditional, thesis-based degree. The MSPQC is a professional Master’s, designed to be completed in 12 months.
